Plan an online school timetable and check teacher workload
Check class demand, teacher limits and teaching assignments before generating the browser timetable.
Calculate the demand first
Multiply working days by teaching periods per day for each class. Breaks are not teaching periods. For example, two classes with 5 days and 6 periods have 2 × 5 × 6 = 60 possible class periods. This is a fictional planning example.
Count how many periods are actually assigned to subjects. The online tool permits unassigned class slots to remain free. A complete solution means all entered assignments were scheduled; it does not guarantee that every possible class slot has a lesson.
Set teachers and shifts
- Add school days, period duration and break settings. Add shifts only if classes use different starting times.
- Add classes and assign their shift.
- Add teacher names, daily and weekly maximums, then unavailable slots.
- Enter one teaching-assignment row per class, subject and teacher with the required weekly period count.
- Generate, then inspect class-wise and teacher-wise views before downloading.
Weekly limits and subject assignments
In this online version, a teacher's weekly maximum is a ceiling. The assignment rows determine exactly how many periods that teacher must teach. Changing a maximum alone does not move a subject to another teacher.
For a principal with a ceiling of 10 periods, assign no more than 10 periods in the teaching rows and choose a weekly maximum of 10. If the desired allocation is 8, enter teaching rows totalling 8. Adjust the remaining teachers' assignments to cover the remaining subject requirements. The separate Windows offline timetable program has different workload controls and uses a different configuration format.
Unavailable slot example
1:1, 1:2 blocks Monday periods 1 and 2 for a teacher. The first number is the day and the second is the period, both starting at 1. These exclusions apply across shifts. Across-shift clashes are checked using actual lesson start and end times.
Read a failure message correctly
- Assignment exceeds weekly maximum: reduce that teacher's assigned demand or increase an appropriate limit.
- No feasible timetable: check too many lessons for a class slot, limited teacher availability and simultaneous lessons in different classes.
- Search timed out: this does not prove the timetable impossible. Increase search time or simplify conflicting constraints.
Understand the workload report
Compare required and allocated periods, daily totals and limits. “Free” indicates available unallocated slots; it does not assign substitute or administrative duty. When exporting a class scope, the included teachers' workload totals remain school-wide.
Subject spacing and consecutive-period rules are not enforced in this online edition. Review the final timetable manually for those school preferences, room needs and other rules outside the tool.
Keep editable inputs
Save configuration JSON before closing. Browser inputs are not automatically saved. Timetable CSV/Excel is an output report; it is not the configuration used by Load JSON. Use Print / Save PDF and inspect the selected timetable and workload before saving.
